Came across this Eton FR-300 emergency hand crank radio / power generator. Apparently 90 seconds of cranking is supposed to provide ~1 hr of radio! It comes with a flashlight, siren, cellphone charger (not strong enough for smartphone). Optionally powered by 3 AA batteries or AC adapter.

🔊(sound on) Lots of staying home recently because of Coronavirus; taking a walk outside is a peculiar feeling. Hope everyone’s doing ok! 🎹🎙Strangely, the mini speaker in my toy keyboard behaves like a microphone when I have the keyboard plugged into my guitar amp 🤨 I guess I have some wires crossed. Sounds pretty neat, but unwelcome when I am trying to get a clean recording in!

Here are some of the resistors I’ve been able to identify from the typewriter I took apart. I look at the bands first and then I pull out my multimeter to check when I’m unsure. There are some that I’m stumped on (next slide) - how am I supposed know which side to start reading from when the bands are basically the same distance from each other!?

Swipe to see some carrier action! A couple of nights ago I took apart an old Smith Corona electric typewriter that I had sitting around. I’ve been marathoning the Star Wars movies (well, one a night) with my college roomie and disassembling/breaking stuff during some of the slower scenes has been quite cathartic.

I thought I took some before photos, but I can’t find them! I’ve already plucked out most of the resistors and capacitors from the PCB and am sorting through other parts I might be able to reuse. I have put away the smaller capacitors and am identifying resistor values now. I wish I understood the mechanics of the carrier, it just looks so cool.

DUN DUN DUN DUUUNNNN! I’m DUN with my first circuit bent toy!!! 🎹

More demos of the actual bends to come. Features: pitch body contacts, pitch knob with on/off toggle, 1 pseudo-sustain toggle and 2 other sound effect toggles, audio out (1/8” and 1/4” jacks). It’s plugged into my Fender Mustang III amp using preset #50 here; I’ve been having fun messing around with different sounds.

Unlike the 1/8” jack, the 1/4” jack doesn’t cut the signal to the built in speaker when plugged in. I may consider adding a switch for that in the future.

Almost done with this little one! Just need to finish adding the 1/4” jack I’m testing out here with my guitar amp, as well as some finishing touches. Here it is plugged into a Fender Mustang III and using the #32 preset. Really cool how running it through an amp really opens up the sound vs. the small built-in speaker.
