Sewing Machine Foot Pedal Non-Slip Pad

I’ve noticed that the pedal of my sewing machine tends to slide about on the floor. The pedal is fairly light and the stiff cord attached to it tends to cause it to turn on the spot — plus, I’m prone to accidentally nudging it astray with my foot while working.

Tonight I came across a non-slip pad tutorial for sewing machine pedals, and made one for myself by following this video by Crafty Gemini Creates.

I had some non-slip cupboard liner in stock from when I first moved into my home, and spare 5-inch square blocks from a quilted bubble bag I finished this past weekend, perfect!

The tutorial starts off with a larger piece of fabric, but three 5-inch square blocks were enough for me to create a strip of sufficient length to make the border and strap for the pad. Since I didn’t have a bias tape maker, I just folded the fabric and kept it aligned as I was running it through my sewing machine.

My finished pad measures at ~7 inches x ~4.75 inches.

I gave the pad a shorter length than the one shown in the tutorial because I wanted to use less material and have a closer fit for the pedal…BUT I think I should still have given it a little more room up top by the strap for aesthetic purposes.

I’m not totally sold on the usefulness of this particular front stopper strap due to how flat it is. Unlike the pedal in the tutorial, my pedal doesn’t have a lip at the base that the strap can catch.

In retrospect, I think for my purposes the strap would be more effective with some filling in it, like with the one from this tutorial by Quilting Digest, but it would have required additional cuts of fabric rather than just using the exact remainder of the bias tape I had made. So far I haven’t noticed any slippage anyway.

I really like this pad already. It was very easy to make, doesn’t use much material — and it works!
